It uses laser light instead of the original high intensity discharge lamp (HID)(laser light more durable, the service life of laser light is 3 0,000 hours,while HID is 1000 hours), and obtain brighter brightness and more detailed contrast ratio, and wider color gamut. In addition, IMAX laser system also contains a new generation channel sound system.
According to global IMAX Chief Quality Officer David Keighley, the effect of the small screen HID lamp is pretty satisfied, while laser projection system is mainly for bigger screen that is over 25m wide, the max can come to 38 meters.
The South China Mall IMAX screen is 27.6 meters wide and 21.3 meters high,it’s the largest commercial screen in Asia. After 4 months of renovation, the mall upgraded and become Asia's first IMAX laser projection system cinema. Next, Yongtai in Harbin, science andtechnology museum in Liaoning will also be upgraded for laser projection system. It is known that IMAX laser projection system has been installed in 18 theaters worldwide.
